A variety of short workshops and a brand new extended morning workshop will be held during this year's Research and Dessert.
Workshop on Funding Success with Foundations and Corporations - 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Check in and grab a dessert between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m.
Info sessions are organized by strand, begin at 1:00 and 2:00, and last 45 minutes.
Speed Networking begins at 3:00.
You can design your own Research and Dessert experience - attend a workshop and or session, visit the information tables, participate in Speed Networking, or just enjoy dessert and visit with colleagues.
Drawing for prizes - an iPad Air and travel to visit funding sponsors - will be held after Speed Networking @ 3:45 p.m. You must be present to win.
A reception sponsored by the provost office will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the South Ballroom of the Bernhard Center.

Description:
In this extended workshop, consultant Jane Geever, author of the Foundation Center's Guide to Proposal Writing, will provide detailed information on developing external funding proposals for foundations and corporations. Jane Geever has heard it all from the grantmakers. Through 20 years of conversations with foundation and corporate executives, Geever has isolated those proposal elements that make the difference to the grantmakers and will work with participants to apply these concepts to their ideas. |

In this extended session, Professor Charles Henderson will provide a comprehensive overview of NSF proposal development, including understanding the solicitation, communicating with the NSF program officer, budgeting, key elements, fundamental content, and review criteria. |

Title: Get to Know the FRACAA Program

Description:
This session will provide information on the Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA). The purpose of the FRACAA is to encourage and support faculty in significant research, rigorous scientific inquiry, original artistic activity and inventive technology. The award, up to $10,000, is also intended to increase external funding to WMU in support of faculty scholarship. Eligibility, award conditions, application requirements, and submission procedures will be presented in preparation for the January 16, 2015 submission deadline. |

Description:
Bring a colleague or a whole group to learn more about the National Endowment for the Humanities Collaborative Research Grant Program. Collaborative Research Grants support interpretive humanities research undertaken by a team of two or more scholars, for full-time or part-time activities for periods of one to three years. Support is available for various combinations of scholars, consultants, and research assistants; project-related travel; field work; applications of information technology; and technical support and services. |

This session will highlight several funding opportunities aimed at partnerships between academic researchers and businesses. Information regarding the Federal SBIR and STTR programs, as well as the Michigan Corporate Relations Network SCIP program will be provided. Interested faculty should bring along an industry partner to learn about how these programs can support your work together. |

Developing a budget and budget justification is a challenging part of the grant proposal process. This workshop will offer insights into the budget planning process, including determining and justifying the direct costs that will make your project a success. Presenters will review WMU guidelines for budgeting salary, benefits, students, facilities and administrative costs, and all other allowable costs. |
